Drop Off Procedures -- PLEASE READ

We know this is a long post, but please try to read it in its entirety.

We have been having difficulty with our arrival procedures this week and we need your help.

The number of students coming in after 8:35 this week were as follows:

Monday - 12 students
Tuesday - 7 students
Wednesday - 56 students
Thursday - 0 students
Friday - 27 students

While we have definitely seen an impact of more cars in our parking lot since the implementation of the no-parking signs along the Wyndham Farm cross-streets, as Thursday's data indicates, it IS possible for all students to arrive on time.

That said, we have identified other problems (in addition to cars entering the parking lot after 8:35) that create backups in the line and cause students to be tardy:

1. An overall reduction in carpooling
2. Bussers being driven to school
3. Students trying to exit on the left or climbing over passenger-side carseats
4. Students not being prepared with backpacks and lunches ready to go
5. Parents talking to students while exiting/after exiting
6. Use of cell phones in the line
7. Drivers not paying attention when the line is moving forward
8. Reliance on staff to get kids out of cars/zip up backpacks/put lunches in backpacks/etc

That said, please be sure to help us by doing the following:

1. Carpool as much as possible
2. Utilize the bus if you are afforded bussing due to your location
3. Be sure students can easily exit on the right-hand side
4. Have backpacks ready to go with lunches inside and backpacks zipped and on kids laps when they are ready to exit the car
5. Do NOT use the time when students should be exiting to give hugs and kisses or to talk to students. Do NOT wave or talk to students once they have exited your car. Drivers looking at the walkway and talking/waving to students has caused more near-miss rear-end accidents than any other activity
6. Please do not use your cell phone while in line and pay attention to the car in front of you - move forward when the line starts moving
7. Know that staff is there to assist with problems, make sure your child can exit the car quickly and independently on the right hand side -- practice this at home to make it as efficient as possible

Our internal procedures for TARDY students:

Any student arriving to their classroom after 8:35 is TARDY regardless of the reason.

If there is a break in traffic at any time between 8:20 and 8:35, students arriving after 8:35 will be marked tardy (Wednesday is a good example of this). If there is NOT a break in the line, students will be told they are tardy but will not be marked as such on PowerSchool. While this is implemented consistently, it is done at the Principal's discretion AND is done as a courtesy.

Please do not argue with the main office staff about your child being marked tardy. We are extremely consistent with our procedures and the bottom line is that regardless of the line of traffic, students are required to be in school by 8:35 -- crossing guards are provided at taxpayer expense to ensure that all students have the ability to WALK onto campus to avoid being tardy due to the traffic line. Our not marking students tardy in PowerSchool on the days there is not a break in the line of traffic is a COURTESY, please be mindful of that.

New Parking Restrictions

As you may have noticed, signs restricting parking have gone up today along the streets in the south-side of the Wyndham Farm development. These signs limit parking during arrival and dismissal on one side of the road.

The police will be enforcing these signs on Monday, November 28.

Please make alternate arrangements if your child is accustomed to meeting you in these areas.

Please take a moment today to remind your children that they absolutely may not walk/bike through people’s yards or cut corners through yards. This is happening throughout the neighborhoods but is especially apparent at the end of the school's driveway, as children are cutting through that yard to pass the crowd of walkers.

If children are on a bike they must stay on paved surfaces (do not ride in grass).If children are walking they must stay on the sidewalk.

Please tell them that our neighbors here are very nice but we cannot be rude and walk through their yards. We often have over 100 students walking home, it is a lot of foot traffic to absorb.

Also, remind them that many people have dogs and it is not safe to walk through a yard where a dog lives – kids can startle a dog who is outside and it is dangerous. They also should not approach or try to pet any dogs they see on their way home; even if it’s a dog they usually pet when they see them in the neighborhood, having lots of kids around will make dogs scared.

Thank you for your help with this, we have discussed it in school and feel it wil help to also discuss it at home.

The following messages for students who are walking to school have been taken from the SRTS website. Some points to consider:

Children who are old enough and have parent permission to cross the street need to know the following additional points:

Choose the route with the fewest streets to cross. Avoid crossing busy or high-speed streets.
Be more visible to drivers by wearing bright clothing in the daytime. When there is little or no light, such as at sunrise or sunset, wear retro-reflective gear or carry a flashlight.
Always look for motor vehicles. Drivers are supposed to obey the rules and watch for pedestrians, but they cannot be relied on to always do so.
Do not cross behind or within 10 feet of the front of a bus or other large motor vehicle because the driver can not see this area.
Stop at the edges of driveways and curbs or edges of the street where no curb exists and look for motor vehicles before proceeding.
Watch for parked motor vehicles that may be getting ready to back up or pull forward.
Before crossing, always look for motor vehicles even after a crossing guard, parent or other adult says it is okay to cross.
Walk, don't run, across the street.
If crossing the street at midblock:
- Stop at the curb and look left, right and left again for traffic.
- Wait until no traffic is coming and begin crossing. Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.
If crossing between parked motor vehicles is necessary:
- Stop at the curb and check to see if the motor vehicles are running or if anyone is in the driver seat. If there is a driver, make eye contact and be sure you are seen before stepping in front or behind the motor vehicle.
- If safe, walk to the edge of the parked motor vehicles, and look left, right and left again before crossing. Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.
If crossing the street at an intersection:
- Obey traffic signs and signals.
- When the signal indicates it is time to cross, check for motor vehicles. Drivers may not obey the rules and turning drivers may not look for pedestrians.
- Look to see if motor vehicles are coming. Look left, right and left; then behind and in front for turning motor vehicles. Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.

Bicycle Helmets

The protective effects of bicycle helmets are well-documented. [7], [8] Studies on bicycle crashes have shown that helmet wearers have a significantly lower risk of head and facial injuries than those bicyclists without helmets.[9], [10], [11] In fact, one study found that bicyclists wearing helmets had reductions in their risks of head and brain injuries of 85 percent and 88 percent respectively.[12]

Bicycle helmets must be used by students participating in bicycling program. Our school has rules that require students to wear a helmet whenever bicycling to school. This is NJ State Law, all students must wear helmets when biking. See the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute for a list of locations with laws.

Bicyclist Safety Skills

Riding a bicycle is a major step towards independence and mobility for children and, like walking, is a skill that can be used throughout a lifetime. Supervised practice time on the bicycle is the most important way for children to gain riding and safety skills. It can also instill confidence and create better riders as well as better future drivers who are more aware of bicyclists on the street.

Before riding to school, children first need to have sufficient bicycle handling skills, including the ability to:

Ride in a straight line.
Ride in a straight line while scanning the situation ahead, behind and to the side.
Stop quickly using the bicycle's brakes without swerving, falling or colliding with anything.
Swerve in a controlled manner to avoid a hazard or collision.

When children have these skills, they should learn and be able to demonstrate the following safety behaviors before riding to school:

Preparing for the ride

Dress appropriately. Wear brightly colored, close-fitting clothing. Tie your shoes and secure long laces and loose pant legs. Do not wear headphones.
Wear a properly fitted helmet. See the Resources section for information about bicycle helmet fit.
Ride a bicycle that fits. When seated on the bicycle, both feet should be firmly planted on the ground and hands should reach the handlebars.
Ride a bicycle that is in good condition. Tires should be firm, brakes should prevent tires from rotating when pushed, chain should not droop or be rusty and the seat and handlebars should be tight.
Do not carry anyone else on the bicycle. A bicycle with one seat is a bicycle for one person.
Do not carry anything in your hands. Use a backpack, basket or panniers to carry school supplies and books.
It is best to ride only in daylight. If riding when it is dark, use headlights, taillights and reflectors, and wear bright clothing with reflective material.

During the ride

Choose the route with the fewest streets to cross. Avoid busy and high-speed streets.
Before entering the street, look for other vehicles to the left, right, in front and behind.
Keep paying attention to your surroundings. Watch for other vehicles and hazards, such as potholes and parked motor vehicles, along the route.
Watch for vehicles turning into or exiting at driveways.
Stop at all intersections, and check for traffic before crossing. When possible, cross at locations where adult school crossing guards are present. It may be best to dismount and walk your bicycle across large or busy intersections.
Ride in a straight line with two hands on the handlebar unless signaling.
Follow all traffic laws, including:
- If riding in the street, ride in the same direction as motor vehicles, on the right hand side of the street, about two or three feet from the edge.
- Use hand signals when turning and stopping.
- Obey traffic signs and signals.
Always check in front and behind for traffic before changing lanes, crossing intersections or turning.
If riding on a sidewalk or path, ride slowly and be prepared to stop quickly.

Drivers near the school can help create an environment that feels safe and inviting for pedestrians and bicyclists.

They need to know the following:

Watch for, and yield to, pedestrians and bicyclists near and around the school.
Obey speed limits for the school zone (15 MPH in driveways).
Come to a complete stop at stop signs.
Do not block pedestrian crosswalks.

Please note that it is NJ State Law to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. This means that if a person is in the crosswalk, you must stop your car!

Prune plants and shrubs to enhance visibility. This will help pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers see one another, particularly at street crossings.
Keep unleashed pets off the route. A loose animal can be intimidating and deter walking or bicycling, regardless of the friendliness of the animal.

Please have your child practice getting out of the car.

Parents will drop off students in the front of the school along the front sidewalk.

Students must exit through the right, passenger side doors.
Parents must remain in their cars.
Backpacks and other belongings should not be stored in the trunk and should be easily accessible to your child for quick and easy egress.

Staff members will be available to assist, but it is important to practice getting out of the car with your child prior to the first day of school.

The first day of school is an exciting time for students, parents, and teachers. We understand that parents want to capture their child’s excitement with photos, but due to the increased traffic flow and the need to expediently get students into the building we ask that photos be taken at home, not in front of the school.

I know there has been a tradition of parents following the school bus to see their child off on the first day – this year there will not be parking available to parents on campus during drop-off times. We ask that you please respect the 400 students who are not being transported by bus by not driving onto campus if you are not dropping off a child, and by not holding up the line of drop-offs by taking photos.

We appreciate your cooperation as we work to ensure the safe and efficient arrival of all students.

Supervision Information

Please see below for procedures for dismissal and after-school supervision at Greenwich Elementary School:

PUPIL SUPERVISION AFTER SCHOOL DISMISSAL

Normal dismissal times for students in the Greenwich School are as follows:

Grades One through Five: 2:55 p.m.

Pre-School and Kindergarten: 11:15 a.m. for the morning session and 2:55 for the afternoon session.

Early Dismissal Days: 12:55 p.m.

If you would like to pick up your child prior to his or her scheduled dismissal time, please enter the Main Office and sign the child out with the school secretary. For safety reasons, proper identification is necessary. Please note that students may not be signed out between 2:00 and 2:55 as there is no parking on the school campus at that time.

We recognize that emergency situations may arise necessitation the need to pick your child up prior to dismissal. Early pick-up must be prior to 2:00 pm. (11:55 p.m. on early dismissal days).

We recognize that dangers exist for younger pupils after dismissal, as children are susceptible to risks once they leave school property. Accordingly, the parent or legal guardian of any student in any grade, where the student is either not eligible for, or elects not to use, district-provided transportation, may request, in writing to the Principal, that the school not release the pupil to walk home after dismissal unless the pupil is released to the parent or legal guardian, or an escort previously designated by the student’s parent. Such escort must be at least thirteen (13) years old.

Students must be picked up within ten (10) minutes after the dismissal time of school. During the after-school supervision time, the student will be supervised by school staff in a designated area of the building and will only be released to you or your designated escort. In the event that you or your designated escort does not arrive to pick up the student within the designated time period, the Principal or designee will attempt to contact you or another designated emergency contact using the District’s emergency call procedures. If you cannot be reached, the Principal may report the situation to the Police Department and the child will be placed in the District After Care program at parental cost.

In case of an emergency such that you or your designated escort are prevented from arriving to pick up your child at dismissal within the designated time period, your child will be relocated to the Main Office or to the District’s after school childcare program in the school building and will remain there until you or your designated escort arrives. In the event that you or your designated escort does not arrive within 30 minutes after the end of the school day, the Principal may reassign the student to the District’s after school childcare program or report the situation to the Police Department.

If you choose to request that your child remain at school, for not more than ten (10) minutes, until picked up by you or your designated escort, your request shall be applicable for every school day and shall apply for the entire school year. Requests to release the student to walk home on individual days must be made in writing and are subject to the approval of the Principal. You may rescind your request that the student not be released to walk home by indicating, in writing, the date on which the you no longer request the school to provide supervision of your child(ren) after school dismissal. The pupil(s) will then be dismissed in accordance with typical dismissal protocol.

Kindergarten students will not be released from the bus without parent/guardian/or escort present at the bus stop. All other students will be released at the bus stop regardless of parental presence unless notice is given to the Main Office in writing prior to the start of school.

Carpools!

Please consider speaking to your neighbors and friends about setting up a carpool. While many parents will want to bring their children the first few weeks of school, it will enable a more efficient drop-off and pick-up process if parents join carpools, thus reducing the overall number of cars in the parking lot.

If you are having trouble finding a carpool, please let us know and we will try to match you with other parents who are in a similar situation.

Drop Off

Drop Off Procedures are the same as last year. Please drop students off along front sidewalk, all cars must stop, students exit to the right, cars proceed once all students are out of cars and signal is given.

Pick Up procedures are also the same as last year. Cars will park in the upper lots along the roadway, parents will go into the gym, collect their charges, and exit. Cars will be released once all students are in cars. Students are organized alphabetically by grade level in the gym.

DROP OFF TIMES
For the Greenwich Elementary School, please do not drop students off earlier than 8:20AM. Supervision is not provided until 8:20AM

Cars may begin lining up for pick-up as early as 2:00PM. Doors will open for student dismissal at 2:55PM. Students being picked up by parents will be dismissed through the gym. Walkers will be dismissed through the cafeteria and onto the walking path. Bikers wil be given a head-start.

Please note that if you try to log on before it is open it will give you an error that your username/password is incorrect.

HELP DESK HOURS:

If you have difficulty logging on after 9:00AM, or if you misplaced your username/password, you may request assistance in the front lobby tomorrow, Wednesday, August 24th, during the Open House tours. We have set up a "help desk" during this time and a staff member has been assigned to assist parents who are having difficulty logging on to PowerSchool or obtaining their child's teacher assignment.

If you are unable to attend tomorrow's tour and require assistance, please call or email the main office and you will receive a return call tomorrow during our "Help Desk Hours."
